Ann Lee

Ann Lee, as known as Ann Chia-Ying Lee. She is a cross-disciplinary composer active in both film scoring and classical composition from Taiwan, possessing a dual master's degree in film scoring from Berklee College of Music and in composition from the Department of Music of National Taiwan Normal University. Currently a lecturer in the Music and Image Trans-disciplinary Program at Taipei National University of the Arts.

Her works are characterized by a diverse range of styles, seamlessly blending intricate soundscapes and lyrical melodies to evoke vivid storytelling and imagery. Through a fusion of Eastern and Western musical languages, she creates compositions that are both poetic and dynamic.

 

In June 2022, her piece Endless Waiting won the First Prize at the MSH Media Sound Hamburg Young Talent Award. Earlier that year, in April, her work The Journey of Inspiration received an Honorable Mention at the Film Scoring Academy of Europe’s 2022 Call for Scores. In June 2020, she awarded the Peer Recognition Award from Master of Music in Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games of Berklee College of Music. In October 2016, her orchestral work The Forms of the Water won the Second Prize of 2016 TCO (Taipei Chinese Orchestra) International Composition Competition, TCO Members Special Award, and Conductor Special Award.

 

In 2022, Ann was selected from among hundreds of outstanding composers worldwide to participate in the American Women Film Composers’ Mentorship Program, becoming the only Asian composer chosen that year. Also, Ann was selected to participate in the “MABU Project” - Talent Development Project for Screen Scoring, which was a program in which only 25 outstanding composers out of 300 applicants in film scoring were eligible for this project; in addition, she was selected as the lecturer of the film scoring workshop with her outstanding performance after participating in the MABU Project.

 

​As a creative composer for visual media and concert music, she worked as an assistant composer and music arranger in the studio, scored for various short films, TV series, commercials. Meanwhile, she engages in commissioning composition and arrangement from the various musical ensembles. There is a wide variety of instrumentation in her works, including chamber, orchestra, Chinese orchestra, symphonic band, musicals, etc.

 

In recent years, Ann’s compositions have been performed in Asia and Europe; also, she has cooperated with the well-known professional musical ensemble as follows: Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan, ZhongHua Chinese Orchestra, Taiwan Wind Ensemble, Con Bello Symphonic Band, E-Sound Concert Band, etc. Her works have also been performed and recorded in Teatro Martin i Soler Palau de les Arts (Valencia, Spain), Aula Magistral Palau de les Arts (Valencia, Spain), Große Musikvereinssaal (Vienna, Austria), Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna, Austria), Gold Coast Youth Orchestra Concert Hall (Queensland, Australia), Taiwan National Concert Hall, Taipei Zhongshan Hall, Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center, Taipei Cultural Center, etc.
